My Realms of Myst

My thoughts:
I’ve been struggling with an issue thats hard to name and I refer to it as “dead eyes”.
Between projects, when I get back to sketching, I always have a stag with expressions. They would always come out wrong and I get locked in thinking my art has gone to shit. This happened again right at the start of #inktober. Hence why I haven’t made any submissions yet.
But,,,I think I narrowed down the cause this, and if it helps anybody out there by any chance, I’d like to share it.
When I think too much on making the char super detailed, I always forget about paying attention to its emotions. I think that people are never emotion-free. We always have a degree of emotion in our faces. When I get caught up with details and work too hard, they come out stiff with no life and absolutely no expressions. The two faces on the top left are exactly of that problem. And so they look dull and boring. Just, absolutely meh… However, when I focus on the basic shapes, and find how to present those shapes according to the emotion of the character I want to draw, everything becomes smooth and alive. And alive means “more interesting”. The right Mohawk dude is that later example. What I’m trying to say is, when drawing characters, the internal subject has to lead the external subject. What the characters look like is how it feels. And how it feels tells a story. And stories are what people what. Emotions delineate the shapes through action. Not pointless reality.
